‘The 100’s’ Marie Avgeropoulos previews Octavia’s struggle: ‘No one will ever replac…

“The 100” isn’t exactly a light-hearted comedy, so it should surprise no one that one of the show’s most troubled characters is taking a dark turn in Season 4. Octavia (Maire Avgeropoulos) ended last season by mercilessly executing Pike (Micahel Beach) in retribution for killing Lincoln (Ricky Whittle). Now, she’ll be dealing with her grief the only way she knows how: Violence.

For the first few episodes of “The 100” Season 4, we’ll see a much colder, much more calculating version of Octavia. Being so closed off from her emotions might make her a more efficient tactician, but it also makes her a cold-blooded killer.

“Octavia’s never received any love from any men before other than Bellamy (Bob Morley),” Avgeropoulos says, “So to have such a love like that enter her life and then leave so horrifically, it affected her in a really negative way. And, I don’t know, the only way I can really relate it to is like when people use substance abuse or alcohol abuse to deal with things that affected them in bad ways to sort of numb that pain, Octavia does that — by executing people, and killing them, and just, you know, using that as an out, to not feel things. That’s her next drink, that’s her next drug — so when she does snap out of that, it’s a pretty awakening moment for Octavia, and allows for some, you know, real soul-searching, and almost grieving again for a second time.”

Lincoln and Octavia’s romance certainly was a tragic take on a the typical “Romeo & Juliet” story. As much as we just want to shelter this poor girl from any more suffering, we’re oddly excited to see what her second version of mourning will look like. For now, she seems to be stuck in the “anger” stage of grief, and she’s content to stay there.

At least we can be sure that she won’t be getting another love interest any time soon, even if she’ll be developing some new (and potentially dangerous) relationships with other characters.

“Octavia has a pretty significant interaction with one of the male counterparts in a different tribe this season. I can’t tell you more than that, to give it away,” Avgeropoulos teases. “No one will ever replace Lincoln, let’s just face it — so, you know, don’t freak out.”

One person she’ll definitely be spending more time with this year is King Roan (Zach McGowan) of the Ice Nation. “Octavia and Roan come together and form an alliance that maybe even becomes broken at one point too, so you can see both sides of the story. You’ll have to tune in,” she says.

With the great new responsibility of both the Ice Nation and Polis relying on Roan being a capable and competent leader, we’re guessing he’ll probably be in need of an assassin or two. Octavia would fit the bill nicely in her current headspace.

“The 100” premieres Wednesday (Feb. 1) at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
