The Disney Channel is readying the next generation of high school-themed movie musicals.
Lemonade Mouth is being positioned as the network’s next attempt at recreating the success of its popular movie musicals, like High School Musical and The Cheetah Girls.
The movie, based on the 2008 young adult book by Mark Peter Hughes, centers around five high school freshman from Rhode Island who meet in detention and decide to form a band using unusual instruments. The project’s title (and the band’s name) comes from a student-led protest in the book to save the school’s organic lemonade machine.
High School Musical 2 remains the most-watched cable program of all time, attracting 18.6 million viewers when it aired in 2007. Camp Rock was the most-watched scripted cable telecast of 2008, taking in 10.1 million viewers when it debuted that year.
Lemonade Mouth is expected to debut next fall.
