‘The Magicians’: Cheat days are for donuts, not creepy sex spells

Quentin has never had the best moral barometer when it comes to magic on “The Magicians,” but his latest foray into spellwork was a serious no-no in our books.

He managed to surprise pretty much everyone when after figuring out that he couldn’t bring Alice back to life, Quentin left Fillory and seemed to give up on magic completely. That part, we get — the adventure he’d been waiting his whole life for turned out to be a nightmare that killed his girlfriend and maimed his friends. We’d consider giving up on it too.

However, it didn’t take him long to slide back into the clutches of  magic again, and this time he pulled an innocent girl off the wagon with him. Granted, Emily (Abby Miller) was about as eager as you can get to jump off said wagon, but it’s still kind of awful.

The part of “Cheat Day” we took the most issue with was the illusion spell Quentin and Emily cast on themselves to give each other a few precious moments with their lost loves. Emily’s happened to be the grouchy Professor Mayakovsky (Brían F. O’Byrne), which fills in a few holes about why he was transferred (more like exiled) to Brakebills South. Quentin’s was, of course, Alice (Olivia Tate Dudley).

While it’s certainly stalker-like behavior, Quentin’s decision to sleep with Emily while she was wearing Alice’s face is the move that’s creeping us out the most.

Grief does weird things to a person, and Quentin is going through just about the worst kind of grief possible. Not only did he lose the girl he loved before really reconciling with her, he was actually the one to do her in. Even if it was the right move to save Eliot (Hale Appleman) and Margo (Summer Bishil), that’s still got to be messing with his head.

We’re glad at least that Quentin acknowledged almost immediately that what he did was wrong, and it won’t exactly help him get over Alice’s loss in the long run.

Now if he could just figure out if his grief is making him hallucinate Alice, or if her ghost is actually haunting him.

“The Magicians” airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Syfy.
