As 2013 takes its last few gasps before stepping into the annals of history, it’s time to reflect on what has happened in the world in the past 12 months – and that means it’s time for a whole lot of lists.
Today, we bring you the top 10 Redbox rentals of the past year – which reveals some rather interesting things about our cinematic tastes as a culture. We really do like Melissa McCarthy, for example, and a disturbing number of us are all too willing to rent Kevin James and Adam Sandler movies (c’mon America – we can do better than this!).
McCarthy may well be the newest “America’s Sweetheart” candidate as she’s nailed down the top two spots on this year’s list. Her costarring role with Jason Bateman in Identity Thief was the biggest rental of 2013 for the fire hydrant-colored kiosks, while her work with Sandra Bullock in The Heat came in second overall.
Horror lands in the third spot – thanks to Brad Pitt’s World War Z, and we got a double dose of political action in the top 10 thanks to appearances by Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down.
Still, the biggest surprises on the list – or maybe they’d be more accurately described as the biggest disappointments – are the appearances of the dreadful Adam Sandler flick Grown Ups 2, and the not-quite-as-awful (but still pretty terrible) Kevin James vehicle Here Comes the Boom in the top 10. Maybe guys just rented these titles to ogle Salma Hayek.
Tarantino’s Django Unchained, Flight and the ensemble piece Now You See Me round out the top 10.
Redbox also revealed some other intersting data – including announcing that The Impostor was the king of documentary rentals, and Now You See Me spent more time in the top 10 than any other film this year.
