The NFL hasn’t even finished its regular season yet (playoffs? Who’s talking about playoffs?), but it’s never too soon for studios to start dropping $ 4 milllion on Super Bowl commercial spots to hype up their new movies. This year is no exception.
So far, we know that Sony, Disney, Paramount and Lionsgate have ponied up cash (Lionsgate has opted for the more affordable $ 850,000 pregame slot) – so now the game is “guess what movie trailers they’ll be showing!”
Sony seems most likely to build on the momentum of the recently released trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Superhero trailers seem tailor-made for Super Bowl telecasts and this is a big piece of Sony’s 2014 schedule. Hopefully whatever the studio shows does a better job of convincing me that making Electro blue was a good idea.
Disney, on the other hand, has a whole lot of options. I’m sure every geek out there is hoping for some kind of Star Wars teaser, but don’t hold your breath. We don’t even have an official cast yet, let alone footage. Anything shown would have to be some vague teaser-type thing – and really, does Episode VII really need any more teasing at this point?
Instead, it seems likely that the House of Mouse will give us some sort of Marvel update. I like Cinemablend’s idea that maybe this is where we get a look at Guardians of the Galaxy or the new Captain America. We really hope the idea of them showing off Aaron Paul’s Need for Speed is off base, but we wouldn’t be shocked if it showed up given that it’s releasing in March. After all, Disney’s big reveal last year was The Lone Ranger – and we all know how that went.
Paramount will obviously be showing off Transformers 4: Age of Extinction, which is another perfect choice for a Super Bowl audience. Need a break from watching 300-pound linemen batter each other? Watch these giant robots do it instead.
No one seems to have any concrete info on what Lionsgate will show, but speculation is leaning toward the next Hunger Games film or something tied to its other YA release, Divergent. We would think Hunger Games is big enough to warrant a spot during the actual game – so maybe it will be Divergent after all, since it’s arriving in theaters a month later.
It’s a given that other studios will be joining the mix as well – but until that happens, these are some of the titles you can look forward to on Super Bowl Sunday this February 2. Since my beloved Steelers aren’t even sniffing the playoffs, let alone getting to the big game, these ads will be the highlight of my Sunday. At least they should be more interesting than the game…
