It was a good news-bad news situation for “The X Factor” premiere on Wednesday. On the good side, the show gave FOX its best season-opening Wednesday since the early 1990s. On the bad, it was well below the premiere numbers for “American Idol” last season and below what most people were expecting.

Elsewhere, “Modern Family” and “The Middle” both posted strong premiere numbers, and ABC’s new drama “Revenge” had a decent opening as well. NBC’s “Up All Night” and “Free Agents” dropped a good amount in their regular homes, while CBS’ lineup was pretty steady.

The total-viewer crown on Wednesday went to CBS, which averaged 12.3 million viewers and a 7.6 rating/12 share in households, edging FOX’s 12.1 million and 7.2/11. ABC (11.4 million, 7.0/11) finished a solid third. NBC was a ways back in fourth with 6.6 million viewers and a 4.4/7. The CW (1.3 million, 0.9/1) wasn’t much of a factor.

FOX led the adults 18-49 demographic with a 4.2 rating, narrowly beating ABC’s 4.1. CBS took third with a 3.5, followed by NBC at 1.8. The CW managed only a 0.6.
