ultron logo Update: Avengers: Age of Ultron Will Not be a Strict Adaptation of the Comic Series

Update: Joss Whedon has clarified in no uncertain terms that Avengers: Age of Ultron will not be an adaptation of the recent comic series of the same name. It will instead be a new version of the story that doesn’t require the use of Hank Pym (Ant-Man), as he won’t show up until farther in the film series.

“A lot of people—because we called it Age of Ultron and there was a book, Age of Ultron just recently—assumed that was the storyline we are doing, which is not the case.  We’re doing our own version of the origin story of Ultron.  The other thing is, in the origin story, there was Hank Pym.  So a lot of people assumed that he was going to be in the mix, but he’s not.   Because we’re basically taking the things from the comics for the movies that we need and can use.  A lot of stuff has to fall by the wayside.  Ultron was their chief villain.  He’s been theAvengers villain for so long.  I was amazed anybody was surprised that it was going to be him in the movie.  We are crafting our own version of it where his origin comes more directly from the Avengers we already know about.”

Joss Whedon just took the stage at Comic-Con to announce a surprise teaser trailer for Marvel’s The Avengers 2. Sadly we don’t have the footage to share with people, but we do have the big reveal. The highly, highly anticipated sequel will now officially be Avengers: Age of Ultron.

We don’t know if it will be a strict adaptation of the Marvel’s recent, 10-issue Age of Ultron that wrapped up this past June, but we do know that Ultron will definitely be the villain. That would mean that Thanos, as teased at the end of the first Avengers, will likely be used elsewhere in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In the comics, Ultron is a sentient robot built by Dr. Hank Pym, aka Ant-Man, that went rogue, turning against his creator and mankind in general. He’s got a wide range of powers, including flight, superstrength, and various energy rays, including one that puts people into a coma. The Age of Ultron comic is about Ultron returning to Earth to take over the entire planet.

Vin Diesel teased that Marvel would have a major announcement for whatever role he’s playing by the end of the month, so don’t be surprised if he ends up being the metal man.
