Suicide is never an easy topic to process. When movies deal with a person taking their own life, they often go one of two ways. They either build up to it, exploring the state of a character’s life leading up to their final moments, or they focus on the surviving family members and friends whose lives have just been altered by someone else’s decision. In a compelling new short film After Sophie, however, you get a bit of both, plus an extra twist.
After Sophie is presented as a documentary about a teenage girl who has sadly taken her own life. It looks at what was going on in Sophie’s world, and questions whether the demons that haunted her were figurative or, in a potentially supernatural twist, literal. It comes from writer-director Minhal Baig who has a knack for telling stories in search of that frustratingly unknowable moment, or emotion, that sends people’s lives off into a new direction. While having a far less ominous tone than After Sophie, there’s a similar sensibility at play in her impressive feature debut 1 Night about two different couples – one teen, one adult – taking stock of where their lives have been and where they’re possibly going.
