UPDATE: Yes, the wait is almost over as Volume 1 of Kyle Dixon and Micheal Stein’s score will be released on Friday (Aug. 12). The second installment of the music will be released on the following Friday. It may just be time to put up those Christmas lights and frantically dance around the house like Ms. Byers!

The original story continues below

Something special has been happening in genre cinema over the past few years. Not only have we seen a resurgence in minimalist horror, harkening back to the nostalgic era of the late ’70s/early ’80s.

But the music coming with these fun bits of entertainment has seemed to follow suit. Channeling the tone of the early musical works of John Carpenter and Tangerine Dream, scores for films like “Drive,” “Maniac” and “It Follows” have brought synth-driven music back to the forefront of pop culture.

On Friday (July 15), Netflix premiered the new supernatural series, “Stranger Things.” While the eight episode season succeeds at taking the viewer on a trip back to the ’80s with its Stephen King/Steven Spielberg style, one other detail truly stands out: the music.

The atmospheric score plays heavily on those influences mentioned above and as soon as the opening theme hits the screen, it’s hard to not be drawn in for the long haul.

The musicians behind the score are Kyle Dixon and Micheal Stein of the Austin quartet, S U R V I V E.  Fans have waited with baited breath for the delightfully creepy score for “Stranger Things” to be released. According to the Official Facebook page for the series, the music is almost here!

With a new S U R V I V E record coming soon on Relapse, it looks like the Netflix series may have just helped propel them to another level altogether. While we all wait for the synthy goodness of “Stranger Things” to be released, check out the band’s first two albums below.
