Earlier this week Empire unveiled a boatload of character images from X-Men: Days of Future Past for its very special March issue of the magazine*. But the British outlet didn’t just get the exclusive on a bunch of images from the movie, it has also apparently filled the issue with plenty of X-Men-related features, including an interview with Lauren Shuler Donner, who has been a producer on every single X-Men film since Bryan Singer’s original, and had some interesting things to say about a potential Gambit movie.
Donner told the magazine:
“I’m dying to do a Gambit movie with Channing Tatum. That doesn’t have to be a great big movie. It’s a thief in New Orleans, it’s a whole different story. He’s on board, and I have to get the studio on board. How can anyone resist Channing? He’s such a sweetheart.”
Now, the most interesting thing here isn’t that Donner wants Channing Tatum for Gambit (the actor has already expressed his own interest in playing the card-throwing hearthrob), but that she wants a Gambit movie to be smaller in size. And we actually think that’s a cool idea.
We’re bordering on superhero overload as it is, and it’s only going to get worse now that every movie is going to be trying to top the levels of spectacle we saw in The Avengers and Iron Man 3. It’ll be nice to see more intimate, smaller scale stories being told with these characters. Marvel Studios is already trying it with Ant-Man, which is being described as a heist movie, so hopefully Fox sees what Donner does and this project does see the light of day.
But what say you? Does Tatum coming from New Orleans and already being a fan of Gambit make him right for the character? At the very least, is he a better fit than Taylor Kitsch was?
*Don’t ask us why all of the details of the March issue are arriving in January; magazines are weird like that.
