Zac Efron is in chats to star in the next box office adaptation of one of Nicolas Sparks’ best-selling novels.
Efron — currently featured in the dramatic film Charlie St. Cloud — is being courted for The Lucky One, Sparks’ 2008 story of a US Marine who finds a photo of a woman in the sands of Iraq. The young man survives three tours of duty and counts his good fortune down to the photograph he carries around with him. When he returns home to North Carolina, he looks her up, but doesn’t tell her how she came on his radar.
Oscar-nominated Shine lensman Scott Hicks has been tapped to helm the project, based on a script by Will Fetters.
The High School Musical alum would be joining the proud money-making tradition of Nicholas Sparks movie adaptations that began with The Notebook. Other Sparks works that have made it to theaters include A Walk to Remember, Message in a Bottle, Nights in Rodanthe, and Dear John and The Last Song, both of which opened in 2010.
