A White Martian is about to turn ‘Supergirl’ into a horror show

A group of innocent people locked inside a building with a deadly monster and only one hero to defend them? It sure sounds like the premise of Monday’s (Feb. 6) “Supergirl” episode is a horror movie!

After realizing that M’Gann (Sharon Leal) is being hunted by White Martians for betraying their race, J’onn (David Harewood) and Kara (Melissa Benoist) commit to defending her inside the DEO. Unfortunately for them, they bring a White Martian scout inside instead, trapping themselves in the building with a monster on the loose. The worst part? White Martians can shape-shift, so they’ve got to be suspicious of everyone — even each other.

“These White Martians are clever bastards, who can assume other identities and chaos definitely ensues,” Harewood says. “The episode has got some light moments and some pretty intense ones.”

We have no doubt that Kara will find some way to best this White Martian and save M’Gann from being taken away — at least we hope she will, considering M’Gann’s presence has been a great way to dig deeper into J’onn’s history and tragic past.

“M’Gann’s presence has challenged J’onn in many ways. It’s challenged him ask himself questions about why he automatically hates White Martians. It challenges his own prejudice,” Harewood says. “I think M’Gann strength — her power, her courage — really kind of makes him challenge his own beliefs. Deep down inside, I think he’s surprised to find that he really rather likes this girl. That really surprises J’onn Jones, and we’re going to see how their relationship, over the next couple of episodes, will expand.”

“Supergirl” has never shied away from depicting hard truths and real life issues. It’s probably a good thing that we’re watching J’onn face his own prejudices, given the global prejudices that face us in the real world.

J’onn made a huge move in forgiving M’Gann for the atrocities her people committed (even the death of his own family), and now that seems to have opened up a gate for him. It’s probably too early to say that this relationship will take a romantic turn (and we’d honestly find it more compelling if it didn’t), but we’re keeping ourselves open to every possibility

Screener also asked Harewood about how the Guardian team of James (Mehcad Brooks) and Winn (Jeremy Jordan) will play into the goings-on at the DEO.

“I think J’onn is very concerned, especially for James — but at the same time he realizes they’re useful, and very impressive in what they do,” Harewood says. “I think J’onn has got an eye open to how he can best use these other assets in order to benefit the DEO.”

If you’re hoping to see that spared Martian boy again soon, you might have to wait a while. According to Harewood, that plot is not a priority at present. “I don’t think we’re going to address it again soon, but it’s nice to know that there’s potentially another one out there.”

Hope springs eternal that one day another Green Martian will make his way to Earth.

“Supergirl” airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
