‘Beyond’: Luke & Holden — will the real big brother please stand up?

“Beyond’s” Holden Matthews (Burkely Duffield) is a bit of an odd character in anyone’s book, and we’re not just talking about the Realm jumping or psychic powers. Thanks to his missing memories, Holden wakes up from his 12-year coma as a teenager trapped in the body of an adult.

Screener spoke with Duffield about the challenge of playing a child who is also kind of an adult, especially where Holden and his family are concerned.

“I mean, it’s cool playing that sort of adolescent behavior and mannerisms that you get to call upon,” Duffield says. “It can be very comedic, it can be fun in dramatic situations, so it’s an interesting way to sort of dissect a scene and bringing that sort of adolescent behavior back in.”

The place you see that duality come out most is in Holden’s scenes with his younger brother, Luke (Jonathan Whitesell), who finds himself taking on the older brother role as Holden tries to navigate his new world.

Ironically enough, Whitesell is actually older than Duffield in real life, which aided in both of their performances.

“It’s a funny dynamic, just having the kind of role reversal of him being the older brother in actuality but Luke having to fill that position,” Whitesell says. “Luke kind of throws him in hot water sometimes and throws him to the lions, but I think it’s all for a purpose, and his heart’s in a good place because he just wants him to have some normalcy in his life.”

We’re not sure taking your 13-year-old brother to a college party was the right move for Luke, but we can at least agree that his heart is always in the right place.

“Beyond” airs Mondays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Freeform.
