Don’t panic! — ‘Supernatural’ gives Lucifer a presidential upgrade

It’s taken this long on “Supernatural,” but it looks like Lucifer has finally been dealt with. That’s not to say that he didn’t make some intriguing moves along the way. And in Thursday’s (Dec. 8) fall finale, titled “LOTUS,” the devil finally found made a worthy upgrade: The President of the United States.

Who would have ever imagined Lucifer taking the highest office in the land? Well, if you ignore any political leanings — and ignore current events of recent days — the move does make some dangerous sense.

Unfortunately, though, as we’ve said for some time, this Lucifer storyline has become tired. And even though this was the Season 12 mid-season finale, it mostly missed the dramatic mark. You’d think the stakes would be ramped up with such a high-level target such as President Jefferson Rooney (David Chisum), but that wasn’t really the case.

That’s not to say that the events that transpired didn’t help to set things up for the show’s return. Sam (Jared Padalecki), Dean (Jensen Ackles), Castiel (Misha Collins), Crowley (Mark Sheppard) and Rowena (Ruth Connell) came through — with some explosive assistance by the mysterious Mr. Ketch (David Haydn-Jones) — and Lucifer was put back in his cage where he belongs. But, while the British Men of Letters came to their aid, that didn’t stop Satan from leaving his mark on the world before being banished back to Hell.

It turns out Rooney had a mistress named Kelly (Courtney Ford). And while Lucifer inhabited this vessel, he wound up impregnating the woman — leaving the threat of the worst possible demon seed being born unto the earth.

Of course, taking down Lucifer meant harming the president in the process, but thanks to some tech given to the boys — courtesy of Mr. Ketch — Rooney was not killed in the transference. But, given a scuffle Sam and Dean had with some of his Secret Service detail, the episode ends with our heroes in chains.

For a mostly mild-mannered episode, the final fifteen minutes do give us hope for the back half of Season 12. How will the boys get out of this mess? Something tells us, they’ll receive another hand from the British Men of Letters — but at what cost?

With Kelly on the run, and Lucifer’s unborn baby out there somewhere, it seems that the Winchesters will need to add some of Mr. Ketch’s James Bondian flair to their game to really squash that threat.

“Supernatural” Season 12 returns Thursday, Jan. 26, 2017 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
