‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Nanny Diaries: Arizona’s new romance is Webber’s new nemesis
“Grey’s Anatomy” is nearing its Season 13 fall finale Nov. 17 — and Meredith’s Nanny has seen it all. This week: Bailey gets caught between the future and the past — and her mentor and his wife — while everyone else is in a relationship holding pattern… Except for Robbins, who continues to have the worst luck with women.
There are times Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) comes home after work, and I can tell just by her energy when she’s not up for talking. I’ll put the kids to bed, clean up around the house, and wait for her crack open a bottle of whiskey, the sign that she’s ready to open up and vent. On Thursday night (Nov. 3), Meredith stormed into the house like a tornado and immediately insisted on doing the dishes.
While scrubbing the bejesus out of the pasta pan, Mer explained how Bailey (Chandra Wilson) is now under pressure from Catherine (Debbie Allen) to hire a new consultant on Dr. Webber’s (James Pickens Jr.) Residency program… and that she may be the worst.
While Maggie (Kelly McCreary) tried to placate her anger, insisting Dr. Eliza Minnick (Marika Dominczyk) has a method to her madness, I’m on Meredith’s side. If anyone came into my surgery room and said to me, over and over, “See one, do one, teach one,” with that voice dripping with condescension, I’d probably punch her in the face.

“Don’t touch! Use your words!” I mean, I’m sorry, but what are we: Five years old? She starts out bang-your-head-against-wall annoying — and on her first day. Imagine, in just one shift she’s managed to usurp Murphy’s (Tessa Ferrar) title as the most obnoxious person at Grey-Sloan, and that’s quite a feat.
She reminds me of Dr. Sydney Heron (Kali “Halfrek from ‘Buffy’” Rocha) from Season 2, back when our core four were still in their first year at the hospital — if you want to be a monster in this place, you’ve got some serious competition, but nobody before or since has rubbed people the wrong way like this!
Ugh. Meanwhile, her refusal to work with Dr. Webber is beyond infuriating, and puts Miranda in the worst position imaginable — caught between her boss and her mentor. Meredith doesn’t even know this bit of information yet. Actually, nobody does.
Bailey let it slip to me, though — dropping off Tuck after basketball practice — that hiring Minnick means demoting Webber. Of course, I scoffed at that notion — we’re talking about Dr. Richard Webber! If it weren’t for him, Bailey might’ve never taken over as Chief. When Bailey defended herself by saying that she was just following Catherine’s (Debbie Allen) orders, I was without speech. When Webber finds out this is all happening because of his wife … Well, this is not going to end well.
There’s just something about Minnick — her disingenuous cheerful tone, that overconfident “I’m the authority” presence even though she doesn’t even officially work at the hospital yet — that’s rubbing everyone the wrong way.
…Well, almost everyone. It appears she is going to be Arizona’s (Jessica Capshaw) new love interest. “That name and that face,” I overheard Minnick say while I was en route to pick up Ellis from daycare. “No, that’s not one you forget.” She’s not one for subtlety.

I wish Sofia was around. I have little doubt Arizona’s daughter would not be a fan of Minnick — if she talks this way to adults, imagine how she treats kids! Every time Sofia’s back in Seattle, she complains about how annoying Penny (Samantha Sloyan) is. And even though Meredith has come to peace with Callie’s girlfriend, I’m too loyal to my boss to forgive Penny.
I swear, Arizona and Callie have the worst taste in women. Can’t anyone take note from April (Sarah Drew) and actually try to date outside the hospital? Sign up for Tinder, Bumble, Grindrw.. whatever! Just get out there! At what point will they all realize these inter-hospital relationships never work out? Mer and Derrick, even with its tragic ending, are still the only couple to ever make it work long term… And their marriage was based on a freakin’ Post-It! (Mer told me this “romantic” story when I was still working as a bartender at Joe’s, and even now it’s hard to believe entirely.)
While Ben (Jason George) and Bailey are moving into a good place, and Jackson and April have never been more satisfying — or less annoying, at least — every Grey-Sloan relationship is on the rocks. Owen (Kevin McKidd) and Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) haven’t slept in the same bed in over two weeks. Meredith is still pretending she’s not into Riggs (Nathan Henderson), a situation they’re both still keeping Maggie in the dark about. Catherine is secretly ousting her husband Richard from his post. Jo (Camilla Luddington) still isn’t talking to Karev (Justin Chambers), whose days might be numbered because he beat up DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti), the only person Jo seems to trust these days.
Do you sense a pattern? I fear only disaster awaits Arizona and Minnick — and that’s if this new upstart doesn’t bring the whole place down around her before they even hook up!
“Grey’s Anatomy” airs on Thursday nights at 8 p.m .ET/PT on ABC.
