Is a 'Ghostbusters' Sequel on Hold? Here's What We Know

Only hours after Ghostbusters arrived in theaters, there was buzz of a sequel — or at least a further exploration of the new female-driven universe explored in this summer’s reboot. We know the core cast (Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones) are all signed on for a couple more films, and have expressed a desire to revisit their characters. Tack on solid reviews (73% Fresh at Rotten Tomatoes) and it would appear you have all the makings of a follow-up.

Except there’s a little thing called “box office” that may throw a wrinkle in the whole thing. That’s what THR is alluding to in a new story that claims Ghostbusters will take a bit of a loss since it’s unlikely to hit $300 million globally, a number they claim will help the studio break even. With only $180 million globally as of now, THR assumes all plans for a live-action Ghostbusters sequel will be shelved in favor of an animated movie and TV show, both of which are still in the works.

The studio, however, begs to differ, noting there are a number of other revenue streams in addition to box office that bolster that number. They also say they have “many ideas in the works to further exploit the Ghostbusters universe,” which leads us to believe they’re working on future live-action ideas as we speak.

Producer Ivan Reitman said as much himself when he told io9 that they haven’t yet decided where they’re going next, but that “some kind of continuity and some kind of relationship should be created, and we’re working on that.”

The animated stuff is great, but that’s only going to take the brand so far. If Ghostbusters proved anything, it’s that we desperately need more female-driven genre comedies, and there’s definitely a desire for new original stories to be told within the Ghostbusters cinematic universe.

Here’s hoping they continue to explore those ideas because we for sure need more of this in our lives…
