Reggie Bush could soon become the first footballer ever to be stripped of his Heisman Trophy, Yahoo! Sports said on Tuesday.

Sources with knowledge of the situation have said that the Heisman Trophy Trust is expected to strip the one-time illustrious University of Southern California college football star of his 2005 Trophy by the end of September. The move would make Bush the first player in the award’s 75-year history to have his trophy taken away. Earlier this summer, the NCAA determined that Bush received improper benefits during his college years at USC and the Trust is expected to make that same determination later this month.

In the months since the scandal broke, USC was attempting to erase all memories of Bush from the history of the school, even going so far as to eliminate any traces of the former Associated Press Player of the Year.

ESPN.com writes: “The NCAA cited USC for ‘lack of institutional control’ and handed the Trojans four years’ probation, a two-year bowl ban and a reduction in football scholarships…In July, USC president C.L. Max Nikias ordered the school’s athletic department to return its copy of Bush’s 2005 Heisman to the Heisman Trophy Trust. Nikias also ordered the school to remove nearly all references to Bush and former basketball player O.J. Mayo, including murals, as part of the NCAA’s directive to disassociate the school from the athletes.”

Bush — now an NFL running back — helped the New Orleans Saints win victory in Super Bowl XLIV. During his college years, Reggie also won The Doak Walker Award and The Walter Camp Award.
