'Sing' Sequel on Its Way; Here's When to Expect It
Who would imagine that a movie about a bunch of singing animals would prove to be so popular? Especially an animated tale from a director known for unorthodox, live-action films?
Yet Sing exceeded all expectations. So far, it’s earned more than $429 million at the box office worldwide. In barely more than one month of theatrical release, it’s already soared to #20 on the animated charts for box-office champions.

What do all those numbers mean? You guessed it: a sequel! Universal Studios and Illumination Entertainment announced that Sing 2 is on its way to theaters and Variety reports that it’s already scheduled for release on December 25, 2020.
The first movie was announced in January 2014 and by January 2015 voice casting was underway. So the timetable for the sequel will allow a little more time to develop the script and produce the movie, though at the moment we don’t know for certain that writer/director Garth Jennings (Son of Rambow, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) will be involved, although it’s hard to imagine otherwise.
Note what Jennings (above) said in an interview with Collider last year:
“If there was a desire to move forward, all those characters are resonant; there’s more to them. The characters are based on things and people I know and circumstances that seem to connect with me. I could imagine going forward. I’d love to know what happens to Mike [voiced by Seth MacFarland] and his girlfriend after they leave this movie like Bonnie and Clyde. I think there are places that it could go, but it’s not the … who knows, man? I’m just happy to have finished it.”
Assuming that Jennings is involved, we’d love to see what he comes up to develop his characters and also what new characters he might introduce. Furthermore, what kind of scenario can he dream up to avoid duplicating the American Idol-style singing competition? We have less than four years to wait!
