Superhero Buzz: Squirrel Girl to Make MCU Debut In 'New Warriors' and 'Doctor St…

We’ve been hearing a lot about Marvel’s Squirrel Girl lately. She’s a lesser-known character in Marvel’s massive comic book universe who sprang to prominence after Anna Kendrick shared word that her brother thought she should portray her … in something. Kendrick said: “I don’t know what Squirrel Girl does other than be half squirrel, but I could be half squirrel!”

Marvel had never mentioned the character in any of their plans for movie and TV shows. Still, fans picked up that interesting tidbit and ran with it; BossLogic even created a poster imagining Kendrick in the role.

Earlier this month, our own John Gholson suggested, “A TV series, one that matches the comic, with Doreen juggling college life with superheroics, would be the best fit for Squirrel GIrl.” Now comes word that Squirrel GIrl is, in fact, heading to the small screen.

According to TV Line, Marvel and ABC Studios are developing New Warriors, a team-up of teenage superheroes that would include Squirrel Girl. First appearing in Marvel comics in 1992, Doreen Green, aka Squirrel Girl, is a mutant who soon earned a reputation as the greatest protector of New York’s Central Park. Reportedly the show is being shopped around to various cable and streaming outlets; it’s billed as a comedy, which would certainly complement other Marvel small-screen shows.

Kendrick has a busy movie career, but would she ever consider doing the show?

While we wait to see how that prospect works out, a new video about Doctor Strange has arrived from Marvel. In the sneak peek, we get details about two supporting characters, Baron Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Kaecilius (Mads Mikkelsen). It also features some lovely concept art.

The video is available as a bonus feature on the Captain America: Civil War Blu-ray, which will be released this Friday, September 2. Doctor Strange will hit the big screen on November 4.
