‘Supernatural’ makes way for Lucifer’s comeback

It’s been a while since we’ve checked in with Lucifer (Rick Springfield) and Thursday’s (Dec. 1) episode of “Supernatural” finally gave us a glimpse at what the real king of hell has been up to. The episode, titled “Rock Never Dies,” put Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) in the one place they’ve been avoiding throughout their years of road-tripping and demon-hunting: Los Angeles, California.

With all its cucumber water and constant traffic, the Winchesters have definitely found themselves in a fish out of water scenario. Thankfully, though, they have the assistance of Castiel (Misha Collins) and Crowley (Mark Sheppard) in their hunt. And while they turn over every rock they can — it’s Crowley’s city, after all — they are hit with one road block after another.

But while they hunt for the beast, who has taken up shop in aging rocker Vince Vincente’s body, Lucifer goes on a mission to acquire new followers. And what better way than to get his band back together. If ever there was any proof that hair metal was the devil’s music, it’d be the reunion of the band Ladyheart.

Yet, while the musicians are excited to get another shot on stage, Lucifer’s motivation is simple: Pure and total devotion. His Twitter followers may have increased but as he tells his publicist, social media is like religion and it’s the new followers he so desperately wants.

You’d think Dean would jump at the chance of hitting up a rock concert, but Sam’s the one who has a fondness for Vincente’s music. With the brothers making their way to the venue, Lucifer decides to go solo and kills his band mates. What better way to hog all the attention for himself?

But why is he doing this? What is his plan? Simply put: He has none.

After ranting about God (Rob Benedict) and Amara (Emily Swallow), it became clear that Lucifer is in the middle of throwing the most epic tantrum. And as he promised to continue wreaking havoc on the planet — just because he can — Sam and Dean watched as Rowena’s (Ruth Connell) spell took hold yet again, making the devil’s vessel fall to decay.

Don’t be fooled, though, as this is obviously not the final time we’ll be seeing Lucifer this season. With Vince Vincente dead, and many other victims laid waste, we have to wonder what the devil has in store for the gang. If he’s aiming to outdo awful behavior of the past, then Sam, Dean, Castiel and Crowley will have their work cut out for them.

Real talk: How much more Lucifer can “Supernatural” muster? His original story arc was set to end with Season 5. And yet, it’s seven seasons later, and he’s still with us. His character has already lost its luster. Will he be put back into his cage soon? We hope so, as the midseason finale is quickly approaching. Plus, the boys still need to deal with mom, the British Men of Letters threat and the mysterious — and deadly — Mr. Ketch. Talk about a full plate!

“Supernatural” airs its midseason finale on Thursday, Dec. 8, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
