'The Dark Knight' Won Twitter's Latest Hashtag War
We love highlighting our favorite movies, but it’s not easy to list just a few of them. Or even 1000, as was the case for director Edgar Wright. Still, thousands of people took part in a social media meme this week where you name your top seven favorite movies in any order. Using the Twitter hashtag #fav7films, we each stressfully shared at least a temporary septet of titles.
And then Mashable got the digital media research firm Fizziology to go through more than 100,000 tweets and compile a ranked list of the most popular movies mentioned just on Monday (5am to 7pm). Here are the top 15, which includes individual titles and some lumped-together trilogies and franchises along with their tallied number of appearances:
1. The Dark Knight: 5,056
2. Pulp Fiction: 4,966
3. The Shawshank Redemption: 4,910
4. The Empire Strikes Back: 4,772
5. The Godfather* (all films): 4,604
6. Goodfellas: 3,877
7. Alien* (all films): 3,730
8. Fight Club: 3,574
9. Harry Potter* (all films): 2,757
10. Jaws*: 2,622
11. Forrest Gump*: 2,530
12. Jurassic Park*: 2,356
13. Blade Runner: 1,862
14. The Big Lebowski: 1,860
15 Rocky* (all films): 1,807
Do the results look as you expected? Compare the above list to the very similar IMDb top 15:
1. The Shawshank Redemption
2. The Godfather
3. The Godfather: Part 2
4. The Dark Knight
5. Schindler’s List
6. 12 Angry Men
7. Pulp Fiction
8. The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
9. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
10. Fight Club
11. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
12. The Empire Strikes Back
13. Forrest Gump
14. Inception
15. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
It is strange how no Lord of the Rings movies nor the trilogy as a whole wound up making the Twitter cut. Mashable also has other interesting data, such as Suicide Squad beating out Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Space Jam being more recognized than Annie Hall. The site also features some of the funnier jokey responses to the meme.
This wasn’t just a fun activity for movie-loving regular folk, either. Check out some lists from celebrities, including Adam McKay, Amy Schumer and Michael McKean:
