What we thought then …
In flashbacks, we see the moment between Spencer (Troian Bellisario) and Ian (Ryan Merriman) and find out they briefly dated that summer after he and Melissa (Torrey DeVitto) broke up. Alison saw them kissing and was really mad about it, calling Spencer “a skank” if she enjoyed it.
The video of Alison (Sasha Pieterse) at the kissing rock leads to Toby’s (Keegan Allen) arrest, though it is revealed in the “A” tag that the boy she’s with was Ian, not Toby.
On the “Aria & Ezra Show,” “A” shows Aria (Lucy Hale) the poem Ezra (Ian Harding) wrote about her and the two of them eventually reconcile — but “A” spots them and writes “I see you” on the back window of their car.

And Hanna gets run over, which is awful and scary, though the way she just stands there like a deer in the headlights is kind of hilarious.
What we know now …
It turns out Alison wasn’t mad at Spencer for kissing Melissa’s boyfriend, she was mad at Spencer for kissing her boyfriend. Alison owns what Alison owns and you best not get in her way or try to take what’s “hers.” Her rivalry with Spencer was always a really interesting dynamic on the show.
Toby tells Emily (Shay Mitchell) that Alison was alive when he left her that infamous night — she was getting into a car with some guy. That guy was not actually Ian, it was Ezra.

“A” didn’t write “I see you” on the car, that was Noel (Brant Daugherty) — and this sets off a storyline where Noel knows about Ezra and Aria and tries to blackmail Ezra about it. It sets Noel off down a dark path, and one can’t help but wonder if his darkness was already lurking but was then brought out by not being able to “have” Aria.
Also, side note: The black hoodie thing starts in this episode, fueled by the “Camp Mona” hoodies at the glamping birthday party. Nice. Also nice? The amazing shot of Aria and Emily with their hair blown out.
Mona (Janel Parrish) is the one who runs Hanna over, which she is very sorry about later. But the “A” message implies it’s because Hanna knew too much, when in fact we think it’s more about Mona being legitimately mad at Hanna for ditching out on their friendship in favor of the Liars and even Lucas (Brendan Robinson).
Hindsight hilarity …
This one is not “hilarious” at all, but it’s the first time we meet Mr. Fields (Eric Steinberg) and darn it if we weren’t tearing up thinking about how he’s now dead. In all the stuff we missed during the five-year time jump, it’s the chance to grieve for Mr. Fields that hurts the most.
Creepiest dude award goes to …
Welcome to the Creepy Club, Ian! You’re a skeaze and we’re counting down the minutes til you end up dead on the show.
