‘Vikings’ creator on Lagertha’s siege and what comes next
Things in Kattegat will never be the same on “Vikings.” More than a decade after Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland) arrived in the settlement — eventually becoming queen alongside Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) and removing Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) from her seat of power — the fierce shield-maiden Lagertha returned to invade her former home… And take control.
It’s a move that was a long time coming for Lagertha, who has sat by for years as Aslaug continued to rule over her people.
“For Lagertha, you can understand absolutely why she does it. She says to Aslaug, ‘You took my husband and you took my world. And I’m taking it back,’” creator Michael Hirst says.

Overthrowing Aslaug — and by extension Ragnar — is going to make Lagertha some enemies, though. “We know that revenge is the biggest motivator in the Viking world,” Hirst explains. “You’ve got to expect that Ubbe, Hvitserk, Sigurd and Ivar are going to want to do something about that, so watch this space!”
However, the threat of the sons of Ragnar won’t scare Lagertha away from reclaiming what’s rightfully hers.
“She really is a Viking, she believes in fate,” Hirst says. “If it’s her fate to be killed by one of the sons of Ragnar, which the Seer actually tells her in due course that it is, that she’ll accept it.”

So while this is a victorious moment for Lagertha, it’s a good thing she’s raised an army. Her taking control of Kattegat is going to have massive repercussions throughout the Viking world.
“Vikings” airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on History Channel.
