Watch First 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales' Teaser

Unlikely as it sounded back in 2003, the theme park ride turned big-screen adventure Pirates of the Caribbean has proven to be a resounding success at the box office worldwide. A big reason for its success rides on the shoulders of Johnny Depp. His charming, ramshackle performance as Captain Jack Sparrow helped to establish a fun-loving tone and has kept interest alive through the years.

The fifth installment of the series has been in production under the direction of Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, who previously colloborated on Kon-Tiki, an Academy Award-nominated adventure about a legendary sea crossing. Now we can watch the first teaser below.

The latest sequel will also feature the return of Orlando Bloom as Will Turner, who costarred in the first three installments, and Geoffrey Rush as Captain Hector Barbossa. who has appeared in all the films so far. The teaser introduces Captain Salazar, a leader of ghost pirates who do not look very friendly. As portrayed by Javier Bardem, he seems to be a very threatening figure who has some unresolved business he wants to complete with Jack Sparrow.

Will the movie be as dark as the teaser? That would certainly be a refreshing approach, since the previous installments were becoming more silly as they went. The last episode was released in 2011 and times have certainly changed since then. The plot of the new movie suggests that  Captain Sparrrow must locate the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that gives total control of the seas to whoever possesses it. It’s the only weapon that will allow him to defeat Captain Salazar.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales will sail into theaters on May 26, 2017.
