“Desperate Housewives” Cancelled?!

Is it the end of the road for the Women of Wisteria Lane?

Marc Cherry’s Emmy-winning dramedy Desperate Housewives may not be renewed for another season on ABC, network executive Paul Lee told the Television Critics Association in Pasadena on Sunday.

The comedy drama, now in its seventh season, takes the show up to 2013, but Lee told admits that the future of Housewives, Brothers and Sisters, and freshman crime drama Detroit 1-8-7 hangs in the balance.

He lauded the quality of the three series but signaled that the ratings are a cause for concern as the network decides on their return for the 2011-12 season. Money, it seems, is another, according to The Associated Press. Contracts with the show’s four stars — Felicity Huffman, Eva Longoria, Marcia Cross, and Teri Hatcher — are up this spring. Each actress earns $400,000 per episode, making the gals among the highest-paid TV stars in Hollywood.

Cherry is currently developing an ABC pilot described as “a small town torn between good and evil finds hope when a stranger moves into town.” And Hatcher is rumored to be signed on for a Housewives spinoff, featuring Susan Meyer — the dimwitted character that won Teri an Emmy.

There is good news for ABC viewers. The network has given the new year gift of renewal to six of its top-rated shows. Among the chosen few are: Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, Castle, Modern Family, Cougar Town, and The Middle.
