“Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead” Remake

Christina Applegate’s cult 1991 comedy, Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead, is the latest box office hit on tab for a modern-day remake.

After a big box office weekend that saw the revival of the classic TV hit The A-Team and a redux of The Karate Kid, the flood gates are open wider than ever for an onslaught of updates on classic family film.

Pajiba.com snoops write: “Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter is Dead to the pile of 80s remakes now in development. It’s kind of the perfect movie to remake, too. It was fun movie for my generation, one that I have fond memories of, but I don’t feel violated by a remake and understand that the original wasn’t very good in the first place, so it’s difficult to mess it up too terribly….”

Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead starred Applegate as Sue Ellen, a teenager whose mother leaves for a two-month summer vacation in Australia, putting all five siblings in the care of a cranky old babysitter. When the elderly woman suddenly dies in her sleep, Sue Ellen assumes the role of “head of the household,” faking a resume and posing as a 28-year-old to land a high-paying job in the fashion industry.

The New York Post branded the feature — which also starred a young David Duchovny — “the best teen film” of the year.

The Don’t Tell redux is currently in development and will be produced by The Mark Gordon Company.
