The creators of Dynasty are reviving the hit ’80s primetime soap in a movie prequel, it was revealed this week.

The popular show, which ran from 1981 until 1989, focused on a rich oil family in Colorado, featuring Diahann Carroll, Linda Evans, Joan Collins, and the late John Forsythe as oil tycoon Blake Carrington.

In news sure to excite those of us old enough to remember an era when girls wore acid-washed jeans and Jheri Curls were all the rage, series creator Richard Sharpiro is working on the film adaptation of his classic series. Instead of picking up where the original series left off, however, Dynasty’s big screen treatment will instead be a prequel to the show, set in the 1960s.

“It’s not the wild and crazy 1960s, but the early Kennedy years,” Shapiro divulged in an interview with E! News this week.

“We’ve given thought to the movie before and we’ve been approached by a lot of companies, but no one seemed to have a proper fix on it. Then suddenly we said, ‘Let’s do it [ourselves]!’—and we’re the ones to do it,” he adds.

“It was my daughter Florie’s notion to do a prequel, and that sounded very very good to us. It’s how young Blake doesn’t realize he’s the son of Tom Carrington, but then he finds himself at the head of this company and surrounded by assassins and people who want to do him in.”

Dynasty isn’t the only blast from the past getting a reboot for a modern day audience. The soap’s rival drama, Dallas, is also set to make a comeback, with a new small screen version of the cult classic reportedly in the works.
