Bad idea of the day: Lethal Weapon remake.
Warner Bros. Studio is eyeing a revamp of its hit ’80s cop action-drama, which featured Mel “Blow Me!” Gibson and Danny Glover as a pair of mismatched partners, The Hollywood Reporter says. Gibson’s volatile homicide cop Martin Riggs and Glover’s veteran police officer Roger Murtaugh teamed up for four movies helmed by Superman director Richard Donner between 1987 and 1998.
The franchise grossed more than $950 million at the worldwide box office and a fifth Lethal Weapon, which would have seen Gibson and Glover reunite, was rumored in 2008. That never materialized, but The Reporter believes that with the right casting, a new Weapon could pack a powerful punch at the box office.
“The studio would need to make a risky bet on casting — Jeremy Renner in the Gibson role? — and recruit a hot action director to make this feel fresh. And even though the temptation might be to go big-budget (Warners likes to go big), perhaps a smaller, grittier Weapon might re-establish its credibility….”
What Hollywood stars would you like to see as the new Riggs and Murtaugh?
