Get your digital recorders ready for the small screen premiere of Mean Girls 2: When news first surfaced earlier this year that Paramount has commissioned a follow-up to its 2004 teen comedy about the high school caste system and its influence on teen girls, film fans lodged bets that the flick would quickly find its way to the straight-to-DVD aisle of the local Wal-Mart.

Turns that the sequel to the hit Tina Fey-penned flick is actually being made-for-television. Well…that’s very ABC After School Special of them, isn’t it?

“Our source couldn’t confirm which network the film would end up on, but our bets are that it won’t be on the Disney Channel. Instead, we think it will premiere on ABC Family, a channel which is also owned by Disney but has an audience that is more a Mean Girls target age range. Just check out Pretty Little Liars if you don’t believe us,” writes the movie buffs at MTV Hollywood Crush, who first reported the scoop on Friday.

The new story revolves around a new high school student Jo (Meaghan Jette Martin), who agrees to befriend school outcast Abby after Abby’s wealthy father agrees to foot the bill for Jo’s college admission. Jo and Abby team up to take on the school’s clique of princesses, The Plastics, but the story takes an unexpected turn when Abby learns that her friendship has been bought and paid for.

Last month, teen actress Maiara Walsh confirmed through her Twitter that she will star as the lead “Plastic” in the new Mean Girls. Shortly after, J.O.N.A.S star Nicole Anderson and Jennifer Stone also announced their involvement with the project.

Mean Girls is expected to begin filming in Atlanta later this month. Be on the lookout for the film’s world television premiere in mid-2011.
