Scarlett Johansson, Denzel Washington, Viola Davis, and Catherine Zeta-Jones were among the winners at last night’s Tony Awards, hosted by Sean Hayes live from Radio City Music Hall.
The Lost In Translation actress – who made a rare red carpet appearance with husband Ryan Reynolds – picked up the gong for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her role alongside Liev Schreiber in A View From the Bridge.
“Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to be on Broadway. And here I am,” she said. Johansson thanked Reynolds in her acceptance speech, saying, “To my Canadian, whom I live with, Ryan thank you for becoming a theater widower with me.”
Catherine Zeta-Jones – who famously showcased her musical talents to Oscar-winning perfection in the 2002 film adaptation of Broadway hit Chicago – won the Best Actress in a Musical award for her portrayal of Desiree in A Little Night Music.
Meanwhile, Academy Award-winning actor Denzel Washington won the Best Actor in a Play gong for his part in Fences, while Oscar-nominated co-star Viola Davis picked up the award for Best Actress in a Play.
Theater legend Angela Lansbury was recognized with an Honorary Award.
However it was the theatrical production Red that was the biggest winner of the night. The play picked up six prizes, including Best Play, while Memphis took the gong for Best Musical.
