The prelude to music’s biggest night got underway at the Grammy Nominations Concert in Los Angeles on Wednesday. Katy Perry was just one the big names on hand to perform at the show and she also picked up an Album of the Year nomination for Teenage Dream.
But the real prize went to this year’s Comeback Kid, hip-hopster Eminem.
After spending several years battling drug addiction, the acid-tongued Motor City native led the field of Grammy contenders, snagging 10 nominations. Em, who was not in attendance, scored two big nods: he’s in the running with Katy for Album of the Year and for Record of the Year for “Love the Way You Lie,” his collaboration with Rihanna. His most recent album, Recovery, quickly achieved platinum status following its release in July and is to date the best-selling album of 2010. The 38-year-old “Slim Shady” star will also compete for Song of the Year, as well as in a host of rap categories.
Pop queen Lady Gaga is also in the running for Album of the Year with The Fame Monster, the followup to her breakout disc The Fame. Country trio Lady Antebellum were also nominated in the category for “Need You Now,” the second best-selling album of the year. Indie band The Arcade Fire rounded out the album of the year nominations with their third album, The Suburbs R&B star Bruno Mars — who appeared on B.O.B.’s summer smash “Nothin’ On You” — lauded seven nods, while multi-awarded rapper Jay-Z, and country group Lady Antebellum picked up six nominations each.
Ah — and how could we forget our beloved Beebs. Canadian pop sensation Justin Bieber was rewarded with a best new artist nomination. The “Baby” crooner, 16, is fresh off winning four American Music Awards last month. He’ll compete for the coveted award alongside a fellow Canadian, rapper Drake; two British bands, Florence & The Machine and Mumford & Sons; and jazz singer Esperanza Spalding.
