Grab your popcorn! It may be the biggest teen phenomenon of the millennium, but Twilight has failed to impress the judges of Hollywood’s annual worst film awards. The nominations are in for the 2011 Golden Raspberry Awards — the Dis-Honor Roll of The Film World — and Twilight’s vampires and werewolves and M Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender lead the pack at the Academy Awards spoof that hands out annual prizes for the year’s worst in film, earning a whopping nine nods each.
Razzies founder John Wilson says that though Vampires Suck was a Twilight spoof, Eclipse was actually funnier to watch.
Ouch.
“I know people who are into Twilight who take it totally seriously and they’re very vociferous,” says Wilson. “Those of us who are not Twi-hards, we don’t get it. I don’t actually know any teenage girls who have had to make the choice between a werewolf and a vampire.”
Wilson admits the inclusion of Eclipse, based on the third book in Stephenie Meyer’s blockbuster fantasy book series, will not be well received by the world’s legion of TwiHards.
“We’re going to get a lot of angry emails,” he said.
Dev Patel’s Airbender, based on the Nickelodeon animated series about a young hero with the power to reunite feuding nations of people who can control air, water, fire, and earth, is up for Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Remake, Worst Screenplay, Worst Screen Couple/Ensemble, and the newly-introduced Worst Eye-Gouging Misuse of 3D.
“All of this gobbledygook language about airbenders and fire benders and water benders,” Wilson retorted during a chat about the film. “You feel like you’re on a bender watching the movie. It’s completely illogical.”
Eclipse stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, and Jackson Rathbone all receive Worst Acting nods, while the film’s entire cast were handed a collective Golden Raspberry nod for Worst Screen Couple/Worst Screen Ensemble.
Other Worst Picture contenders are The Bounty Hunter, Sex And The City 2, and Vampires Suck.
