2017 TV Golden Globes Snubs & Surprises: Gilmore Girls, Outlander, This Is Us and More

Attention TV Academy: Take note at what the Golden Globes are doing—there are some lessons to be learned. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association put out the Golden Globe nominations for its 74th annual awards show and it was filled with plenty of deserving TV names…and had its fair share of snubs. Without further ado…

SURPRISE
Mandy Moore, This Is Us
This is a good surprise! Mandy Moore is turning in the performance of her career, just a tad odd it’s in the supporting category. Did all of This Is Us cast put their names in?

Issa Rae, Insecure
Another great surprise, Issa Rae’s HBO comedy Insecure is one of the freshest shows on TV. All hail the newcomers.

Chrissy Metz, This Is Us
All the male This Is Us costars were snubbed, by Moore and her TV daughter are going for the Globe!

This Is Us
Not that we’re surprised the NBC drama got a nomination—it’s so good—but we’re shocked at this stat: It’s the first NBC drama since Heroes to snag a nomination in this category.

John Lithgow, Claire Foy, The Crown
This isn’t that surprising considering the HFPA’s love of period dramas and royalty, but the Netflix drama was not as buzzy as the streaming service’s offerings. However, these two performances did make the show.

black-ish
Only because this is the only network comedy to break through the streaming and cable clutter.

Nick Nolte, Graves
Oh? Not to sound too flip, but can you name the channel Graves airs on?

Winona Ryder, Stranger Things
A pleasant surprise since Stranger Things hype peaked this summer. Will she be bringing her tangled Christmas lights as an accessory?

Billy Bob Thornton, Goliath
Peak TV strikes again! The Amazon drama snagged an acting nom for its lead….but did you know it was out?

SNUB
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
So…what happened here? Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is one of the best comedies on TV with performances from Ellie Kemper, Jane Krakowski and Tituss Burgess that are the cream of the crop.

Sophie Turner, Game of Thrones
Lena Headey got a nod, but everyone else from Thrones was snubbed. This was Sophie Turner’s season.

Millie Bobby Brown, Stranger Things
Eleven was the breakout TV character of the year all thanks to Millie Bobby Brown’s performance. Props to Winona Ryder and the show as a whole for getting nominated, Millie deserved some singling out.

Cuba Gooding Jr., The People v. O.J. Simpson
He got an Emmy nomination but no Golden Globe?

Sam Heughan, Outlander
Yay for Caitriona Balfe, but where is Jamie?

Tatiana Maslany, Orphan Black
This year’s Best Actress in a Drama Emmy winner was nowhere to be found.

Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life
How is your outrage right now? Has it come to a boil? Netflix’s Gilmore Girls revival featured career-defining performances from Lauren Graham and Kelly Bishop (not to mention scene-stealer Liza Weil) and they got zilch. Nothing. WTF?

Milo Ventimiglia, This Is Us
Hands down the emotional anchor of NBC’s new hit drama, Milo Ventimiglia and his mustache deserved a nomination.

House of Cards
Netflix’s political drama, which routinely got nominations for Robin Wright and Kevin Spacey was shut out.

Orange Is the New Black
Like this year’s Emmys ,the Golden Globes decided to ignore OITNB.

The men of Westworld
Anthony Hopkins, where you at?! Jeffrey Wright also turned in a fine performance in the HBO drama.

Taraji P. Henson, Empire
Last year’s winner for Best Actress in a TV Drama is MIA.

What other snubs and surprises were there for you? The Golden Globes air Sunday, Jan. 8 at 8 p.m. on NBC.

(E! and NBC are both part of the NBCUniversal family.)
