5 Days, 5 Ways: Mom Jeans Are Cool Again–Just Ask Lady Gaga

You don’t have to be a mom to look like one…and we mean that in the most aspirational way possible.

Celebs, with or without kids, are opting for higher waistlines, light washes and relaxed fits—and not of the boyfriend jean variety.

Mom jeans—unlike their baggier counterparts—can flatter almost any body type. The high waist cinches you in close to your smallest measurement; while, the pants gently hug your curves, tapering in just under your hips and accentuating your figure.

Jenna Dewan Tatum is one of the latest stars to mix the popular ‘90s look with of-the-moment trends—a basic cami, choker and a wide-brim hat—for an easy-to-replicate OOTO. Need to go from Sunday brunch to a more formal affair? Swap out sandals for heels, throw on a cropped blazer and you’re good to go.

Everyone knows jeans are an essential part of the model-off-duty look. What else is necessary? Showing off their stellar abs, of course. You’ll see beauties like Bella Hadid pair their high-waist mom jeans with a crop top under an embellished jacket or bomber—that sliver of skin balances out the conservative fit of the pants.

Don’t think mom jeans can be badass? Look no further than Lady Gaga—who proves all black everything will instantly edge up any outfit. Of course, a studded belt paired with a simple tee and combat boots will take the look to the next level.

This modern iteration of the mom jean is made for young, up-and-comers as well, like Justin Bieber‘s protégé, Madison Beer. The singer rocked a distressed pair with an off-the-shoulder crop top and quilted backpack for a look that just screams back to school.

If you think mom jeans are too goody-goody for you, edge it up with a distressed muscle tank, a la Whitney Port. The contrast, paired with a structured bag, will immediately rack up the cool points—not to mention, turn heads.

So, what are you waiting for? It’s time to raid your mom’s closet.
