8 greatest quotes from ‘Sense8: A Christmas Special’

It’s no secret “Sense8” is one of the most woke shows on TV right now — in large thanks to the “no holds barred” allowance Netflix seems to give it all its shows. That’s how we end up with gritty violence, sexy orgies and in “Sense8’s” case… A few serious truth bombs.

From Nomi’s (Jamie Clayton) transgender story, to Lito’s sexuality (Miguel Ángel Silvestre) to Kala’s (Tina Desai) faith, “Sense8” always gives us an intense look at eight very different people with very different stories. Those stories honor the difficulties inherent in being different, while also calling out the problematic aspects of various cultures and societies.

The latest episode, the show’s Christmas Special, released Friday (Dec. 23) on Netflix, spent two hours tackling not just the sci-fi, mind-reading plots, but also the very real trials and tribulations of being human. In celebration of this incredible episode, we picked out the eight quotes (see what we did there?) that truly moved us.

“Why can’t the rest of the world see what we see?”

PREACH, girl! Amanita has such an acceptance and lovely nature — and we’re just as baffled as she is that people can’t see to see the pure and honest love between Lito and Hernando (Alfonso Herrera).

“We may be married, but my body is mine!”

Watching Kala stand up for herself and take ownership of her body was so moving. Her sexuality and desires (or lack thereof, where Rajan is concerned) is no one’s business but her own.

“Why do you like watching this silly movie?”
“I don’t know. I guess I like what it believes in.”
“What does it believe in?”
“People.”

Trust Capheus (Toby Onwumere) to come up with the most beautiful sentiment for the silliest movie. Whenever you need a pick me up, all you have to do is imagine what wonderfully optimistic opinion Capheus would have of your situation.

“You have nothing to apologize for.”

In a world where parents kick kids out of their house and out of their lives for their sexuality, it was hard not to cry happy tears seeing Lito’s mother wholly and completely accept him.

“You have something good and beautiful hidden inside of you.”

Call us suckers, but we love a good “Beauty and the Beast” story. Wolfgang might be violent and more than a little screwed up, but Kala can see beyond that and tell he has a good, loyal heart.

“Art is love made public.”

Watching Hernando get publicly shamed in front of his students was so hard to watch — making it all the more beautiful when he called the photo of him and Lito together art.

“I hate that word.”

The moment when each sensate saw a different slur smeared across the wall was so powerful, and it showed that hate really knows no bounds. This scene throws all prejudice into stark contrast.

“That’s what family is for.”

Bless our Christmas-loving little hearts, these eight sensates truly have become a family in such a short amount of time…

That’s it, it’s time to go watch the entire first season of “Sense8” again!

“Sense8” Season 2 premieres May 5, 2017 at 3 a.m. ET/12 a.m. PT on Netflix.
