A 'Clue' Remake Wants the Murder Mystery to Span the Globe

There’s always an exception to a general rule. In the case of ‘you can’t make a great movie out of a board game,’ the exception is obviously 1985’s Clue. Director Jonathan Lynn found a fantastically entertaining way to turn the whodunit murder mystery guessing game into a movie, and while it didn’t become a massive box office hit, good luck finding anyone born in the ’80s or early ’90s who had cable TV and isn’t a big fan.

Naturally, as is the case with all things ’80s and pop culture, Clue is now being remade. Or, rather, we should say an earlier attempt to remake it has just gotten new life.

Back when Hasbro was betting that Battleship would be a big hit (hey, it was…internationally), they were also lining up a Clue remake at Universal. Battleship didn’t quite hit, and neither did the next few Hasbro movies, like G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Jem and the Holograms. But all those misses did was slow down a Clue remake, which is reportedly back in motion, only now it’s over at 20th Century Fox.

The new Clue doesn’t have any director or writer attached at this point, but the early report is that the film is expected to break away from both the game and movie – which only took place in one house – by becoming some kind of international action-adventure story. That change may rile some fans initially, but Clue really does have a simple premise that can be reformed into a bunch of different scenarios, so going international could be refreshing. Plus, globetrotting mysteries are still welcome in our book. So even as hardcore fans of the original, we’re actually kind of optimistic about a new version. Get the right cast and crew and a new Clue could be a ton of fun.
