‘American Crime Story: Ryan Lochte v Rio de Janiero’ dream cast

As the details surrounding Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte’s alleged Rio robbery get murkier and murkier, we can’t help but think that the tale is just absurd and sensational enough to inspire “American Crime Story” Season 3.

Lochte and three other Olympic swimmers, Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger and Jimmy Feigen, claim to have been robbed at gunpoint in Rio De Janeiro while riding in a taxi cab early Sunday (Aug. 14) morning. Later, Rio’s chief of police denied the claims, essentially saying the athletes made the story up. Now details are emerging that the four swimmers may have been committing vandalism.

The swimmers were ordered to stay in the country while an investigation was opened, and while Lochte managed to make a mad dash back to the U.S., the other three swimmers were pulled off their plane and remain stuck in Brazil.

Talk about a story made for TV!

It’s already got all the key components of a smash hit, with international intrigue, gold medals and corruption, not to mention some super studly athletes decking out the cast.

So far, Stephen Amell has already subtly put in his bid to play Lochte in the event that he’s called on for the role.

Personally, we think Amell would make a better Michael Phelps because obviously Ryan Lochte will just play himself (although Seth MacFarlane admirably threw his swimming cap in the casting pool in this classic ‘SNL’ sketch). He’s got the TV background to pull it off with “What Would Ryan Lochte Do?” Other than that, we’ve got a few casting ideas.

Stephen Amell as Michael Phelps

It’s not an exact match, but Amell is game and you know he’d work to get extra buff for the role.

Sarah Paulson as Mary Carillo

Why is sportscaster Mary Carillo involved in this? No reason, other than A) she’s commentating at the Olympics, and B) Sarah Paulson MUST be involved.

Denis O’Hare as Bob Costas

Get him a good hair piece and he’s all set. This is just too good.

Matt Bomer as Gunnar Bentz

RIGHT?! We know.

Evan Peters as Jack Conger

Again, it’s uncanny …

Cheyenne Jackson as Jimmy Feigen

This one’s another stretch, but Jackson can play 15 years younger than he is, right? That’s why it’s called acting.

If Ryan Murphy isn’t interested in getting to the bottom of this story, we’d be just as happy with a Netflix true crime series like “Making a Murderer.”

Surely with the full force of the entertainment industry behind the investigation, we can find out what really happened that morning in Rio.
