Rumored Mommy-to-Be Mariah Carey will have some competition on the charts this holiday season. Scottish singer-songwriter Annie Lennox has announced that she will also be releasing a compilation of seasonal smashes after inking a deal with Universal Music Group, the company announced on Monday.
One-half of ’80s music duo Eurythmics will release her new album — A Christmas Cornucopia — through Island Records in the UK and Decca Records in the United States and aboard on Nov. 22. As Lennox explains it, the album features Lennox’s personal interpretations of some of her favorite Christmas carols, as well as an original composition called “Universal Child.”
“I’m absolutely delighted to be working with Island Records on my upcoming recording,” says the singer, who spends much of her time these days campaigning against the spread of HIV/AIDS.
“This album is something I’ve wanted to do for many years. It’s a true labor of love, and I feel very fortunate to be in partnership with such a cutting-edge team, especially when I’m at a stage in my creativity when I want to diversify, and pursue my passion in my own individual way. I’ve never been part of a ‘mold,’ and Island (is) really supportive and appreciative of where I’m coming from. I want to make timeless music that people will love in many years to come … and I’d like to think that ‘A Christmas Cornucopia’ is going to be of those recordings,” Lennox explained.
No word on what classic holiday tracks Annie will be covering for her much-buzzed-about album.
