‘Ash vs. Evil Dead’ Season 2 finally gave us the one scene we can’t unsee

On multiple occasions, Bruce Campbell has stated that Starz is the perfect place for “Ash vs. Evil Dead” to call home. After Sunday’s (Oct. 9) episode, we have to agree.

The current landscape of television finds an array of genre goodies existing across a large swath of networks. From “The Walking Dead” to “Supernatural” to “Lucifer” to “The Exorcist,” it feels like there is a horror show for every type of fan. And yet, we have to wonder if the “Evil Dead” sequel series would have ever seen the light of day, in the way that it’s been presented, if it was airing on any other channel.

The main reason we are saying this is for one particular scene in Sunday’s episode. Titled, “The Morgue,” the majority of the story plays out around a bunch of bodies, in different autopsied states. Heading there to retrieve the Necronomicon, what ends up transpiring is one hysterically gross fight scene between Ash (Bruce Campbell) and a… well hung cadaver.

Long story short, the book is buried in the bowels of a dead body and, upon some bloody digging, the corpse gets possessed. After a brief scuffle with a toothy intestine, Ash gets sucked up the cadaver’s rear end.

As the words, “Not the butt! Not the butt!” were screamed, it was difficult not to cheer at the brazen direction the scene takes. Ashley J. Williams has gone to a lot of disgusting places throughout his life as a Deadite fighter, but we think this was the first time his head ever got shoved where the sun don’t shine.

Some may view this scene as lewd and crude entertainment — lowering the standards for horror fans everywhere — but to say that would show a lack of awareness and understanding of the “Evil Dead” brand. Movies like “Evil Dead II,” “Army of Darkness” and even Peter Jackson’s gruesome classic “Dead Alive,” paved the way for depraved entertainment such as this. It’s been a long time since audiences have been given subject matter like this to mull over. Demonic entertainment is nothing new for television, but sometimes, things have to get dirty before the good guys win.

If anything, it feels like the show has firmly found its feet in Season 2. Just two episodes in and Bruce Campbell has gotten his slapstick horror groove back! Not only has the Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert series taken things to the next level, it feels like we’ve taken a trip deep into the bowels of horror and that’s something every fan should be celebrating.

“Ash vs. Evil Dead” airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Starz.
