‘Bad Teacher’ Sequel in the Works: Will Cameron Diaz Star?

AP

School is back in session for Columbia Pictures, which just announced it’s green-lit a sequel to the 2011 hit “Bad Teacher.”

Though there’s currently no deal in place with original star Cameron Diaz, director Jake Kasdan is back on board for the follow-up, as are Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, who wrote the first film and will produce this next one alongside Kasdan. The raucous comedy about the titular teacher who tries to pull her act together took in $ 216 million worldwide, and spawned an upcoming TV series at CBS, which received a 13-episode midseason order.

Hannah Minghella, president of production for Columbia, said the studio is excited to continue the success of the original and once again work alongside Kasdan, adding that new screenwriter Justin Malen’s script “hits all the notes that made the first film such a breakthrough hit and also takes the characters in a new direction that is fresh and fun.”

No word yet on when the film is expected to debut.
