Betty White’s been named 2010′s Entertainer of the Year by The Associated Press.
The beloved octogenarian, 88 adds the 2010 honor to her arsenal of Emmys and Lifetime Achievement Awards.
After 102 ballots were cast — submitted from US news organizations that make up The AP’s membership — the final tally was close: White’s 20 votes beat the cast of Glee, Fox’s hit musical, by only two votes. Tied for third with 13 votes were Conan O’Brien, James Cameron and Apple’s iPad. Jon Stewart closely followed with a dozen votes. However a legacy of “sharp comedy cloaked by warm charm” clocked the win for our Golden Girl!
White succeeds bestie Tina Fey, who took the honor in 2008.
“She re-entered the hearts of all ages in 2010,” says Mark Vasche, editor and vice-president of California’s Modesto Bee. “From parents and grandparents who watched her on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Golden Girls, to their kids and grandkids who discovered her spunky octogenarian style in film and used the Internet and Facebook to petition for her Saturday Night Live appearance.”
Congrats Betty!
