Brace Yourself for Benedict Cumberbatch’s Comic-Con Debut

In what’s surely a genius marketing move, DreamWorks Animation has wrangled Benedict Cumberbatch into appearing at San Diego Comic-Con this year to promote “The Penguins of Madagascar.” Let’s be honest — how many SDCC attendees would otherwise wait in line for hours outside of Hall H just to see a preview of yet another “Madagascar” spin-off? Now Hall H will be packed to the gills with fans dying to see the “Sherlock” star in person.

It will be the slinky star’s first trip to SDCC, so we hope he’s girding his loins for what’s a truly unique experience. There was a “Sherlock” panel last year, but Cumberbatch and his co-star Martin Freeman were unable to attend.

There’s also the matter of Peter Jackson’s Hall H takeover for “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” two days later. If Cumby’s already hanging out in San Diego, why not make a weekend of it? See some sights, buy some comics, walk around the convention floor in a disguise to see what it’s like to live as a normal person, and, heck, promote his wiggly mo-cap performance of Smaug the dragon.

“Penguins” will waddle into theaters November 26.
