Seaside Heights isn’t the only city with sand, surf, and an abundance of ethnic stereotypes. The East Coast meets The Mounties on the new Canadian reality series Lake Shore.
Well, this should be good and embarrassing.
The slapped-on spray tans and gelled-up poufs that helped Jersey Shore become the most-watched program in MTV’s history are oozing their way across the Canadian border. (Might want to alert The National Guard…) TV producers in Canada are drawing on the success of the Garden State show that catapulted The Situation, Snooki, and Vinny to small screen acclaim with a docu-soap of its own — enter Lake Shore.
Known for its diversity and inclusiveness, Toronto is the backdrop for the show, produced by Maryam Rahimi of Sunrise Multimedia and director George Tsioutsioulas.
Unlike it’s American counterpart, which set off a firestorm of controversy over allegations that it stereotyped Italians, Lake Shore features an Albanian — who goes by the name Downtown D –an Italian, a Lebanese, and a Czech. They share a beachfront home and vodka-soaked nights with a Pole, a Vietnamese woman who appears to own no clothing other than bikinis, and two folks of Turkish and Jewish ancestry.
Of course, things didn’t always start out that way.
“Initially the show was going to focus on a group of hipsters of Middle Eastern descent, but after a lot of thought, George Tsioutsioulas and I thought it would be much more riveting to explore how eight extremely diverse twentysomething Torontonians co-habitate” says Rahimi.
Lake Shore debuts later this month. Ok Canadian ‘Crunchers, who’s watching? Show yourselves!
