CBS’ move to delay ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ is a good thing

Fans are going to have to wait a little while longer before Bryan Fuller’s “Star Trek: Discovery” makes its big debut on the small-screen. On Wednesday (Sept. 14), CBS announced they will be pushing the premiere of the series to May, 2017 — switching places with “The Good Wife” spinoff, which will start airing in February.

‘Star Trek’ deserves the very best, and these extra few months will help us achieve a vision we can all be proud of,” the official press release reads.

The anticipation is already high on the series as it’s been 11 years since a Starfleet crew has explored the TV galaxy. We just passed the 50th Anniversary of the landmark science fiction series and many were expecting the new program to begin in just a handful of months. While this may be disappointing to many, may we suggest that this move is a good thing?

First off, it’s been over a decade since a new “Star Trek” series was on the air. That’s a big deal, when you really think about it. And while there is probably a lot of pressure on Fuller and team to create something worthwhile for the fans, delivering the new series during the mid-season just isn’t the best idea.

May marks the time of year when seasons begin wrapping up for the summer hiatus.  While networks everywhere will be setting themselves up for fun programming to fill the void, CBS will be coming out strong with their new “Star Trek.” Mirroring the return of Gene Roddenberry’s universe to the small-screen, J.J. Abrams’ reboot landed in theaters in May back in 2009. Timing is everything.

“The series template and episodic scripts that Alex and Bryan have delivered are incredibly vivid and compelling,” said David Stapf, President, CBS Television Studios. “They are building a new, very ambitious ‘Star Trek’ world for television, and everyone involved supports their vision for the best timing to bring to life what we all love on the page.”

New and ambitious are two words that make us giddy, when referencing the franchise. What better way to bring it to old and new fans alike, than to debut it during a month that boasts a very popular geeky holiday. Yes, we’re referring to Star Wars Day —  better known as May 4th.

It’d be pretty fantastic if CBS began airing “Star Trek: Discovery” during that very week. We foresee a massive uptick in “Star Wars” vs “Star Trek” debates in our near future.

“Star Trek: Discovery” premieres May, 2017 on CBS, with subsequent episodes airing exclusively on CBS All-Access.
