Christina Aguilera’s comeback album, Bionic — which cost millions of dollars to produce and promote — has only shifted a total of 200,000 units in five weeks of release, sending bosses at her RCA recording label into “rescue mode,” a new tabloid scoop claims.
Despite debuting at the top of the charts, the LP made history as the low-selling No. 1 in UK history, and bosses at the label fear Xtina’s Era is Done.
She “wants to compete with her peers, but there is a disconnect because, over the years, she’s been a mother and a wife, not a rocker,” an industry snoop told The New York Post’s PageSix Column on Sunday.
Insiders also claim that Aguilera has not been willing to adapt to changes in the recording industry.
“The label has done its part, but she’s headstrong. There have been candid conversations between her and the label about connectivity, but it doesn’t seem that she’s been open to that dialogue,” said the insider.
An RCA rep denies any panic, calling Christina “is a pillar of the RCA Music Group and is an undeniable talent with one of the greatest voices of our time. She continues to push herself as an artist, and we are behind her efforts 100 percent.”
Her manager, Irving Azoff, also denies rumors of strife between his artist and the label: “I am the one who deals with the label, and this couldn’t be further from the truth.”
Back in the day, if someone’s career was floundering labels didn’t fret about “connectivity,” they just tripled the budget for pyrotechnics at their next concert. We’re living in a new age.
