Cine Latino: Eva Mendes Mistaken for Amy Winehouse? Sofia Vergara Crowned Best Crossover Star, Michael Peña Appreciates the Letter “Ñ”
Cine Latino covers, well, all things relating to Latino culture and the movies, every Friday.
As far as Holly Motors goes the film stars French actor Dennis Lavant, who plays a man that travels between different lives, including that of a murderer, beggar, CEO, monstrous creature and father. Mendes plays a character from the past.
Awards season is in full-swing and People en Español joined in on the fun allowing readers to praise Hispanic talent by voting for this year’s best Spanish language picture, actor, actress, director and best crossover. Here are the winners:
Best Actress: Kate del Castillo, the Mexian star co-starred alongside Eva Longoria, Christian Slate and Maria Conchita Alonso in Without Men, a comedy about women living in a remote Latin American town forced to pick up the pieces and remake their world when all the town’s men are forcibly recruited by communist guerrillas. The film plays with the age-old question, what would happen if women ruled the world?
Best Actor: Spanish actor Luis Tosar, best known for his villain role in Miami Vice, continues to push the envelope with heavy performances. He recently costarred with Gael Garcia Bernal in Even the Rain but it was his stellar performance in Daniel Monzón’s Cell 211 that won over audiences.
Best Crossover: Her vivacious look and accent have become ever popular since her starring role in ABC’s Modern Family hit big, but Sofía Vergara began her career long ago as a Spanish speaking television host who slowly ascended to stardom. You can catch the star in the animated film The Smurfs and New Year’s Eve. Other crossover favorites were Ana de la Reguerra (Cowboys & Aliens), Gael Garcia Bernal and Elsa Pataky (Fast Five).
Best Director: Alejandro González Iñárritu for Biutiful. Considered one of the greatest Mexican film directors, Iñárritu received great praise for Biutiful, a story that follows Uxbal (Javier Bardem) a single father of two trying to survive his chaotic life in Barcelona. Bardem received international praise for his performance including a 2010 Best Actor Oscar nomination.
Best Picture: Leap Year (Año bisiesto), directed by Michael Rowe, stars Monica del Carmen and Gustavo Sanchez Parra. Winner of the Camera d’Or award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Rowe’s impressive feature debut chronicles 29 days in the life of a Mexican woman. Highly sexual and minimalist, the film unfolds in just one room.
In other news, according to the Tower Heist star Michael Peña, millions of Americans are losing out on a life of romance, excitement, sensuality and love because they are not using the letter “ñ”. Think of it as the letter “n” with a mustache. Watch Peña as he explains how you can unlock a world of opportunities via mun2.
