Break out your eye patches — “Escape from New York” is getting a remake.

Deadline reports that producer Joel Silver’s Silver Pictures has teamed up with Studio Canal to start a new franchise based on John Carpenter’s 1981 film, which depicted the island of Manhattan as a maximum security prison for a post-apocalyptic America. The movie starred Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken, a one-eyed convict tasked with rescuing the president after his plane crash lands in the city.

Silver is aiming to take the film in a new direction, with the goal of writing the remake as an origin story that will eventually turn into a trilogy, similar to the way “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” rebooted that franchise. A search for a writer is underway.

Another reboot had recently been planned by New Line Cinema, with either Gerard Butler, Jeremy Renner, or Tom Hardy filling the Plissken role. That project fell through close to two years ago.
