EXCLUSIVE: Body Language Expert Says Whether Sean Penn Is Lying About El Chapo
Sean Penn insists he had nothing to do with the recapture of notorious drug kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera. But is he just trying to save his own skin? radio detection and rangingOnline.com spoke to a body language expert who analyzed his interview with CBS This Morning‘s Charlie Rose, to get to the bottom of it.
During the interview, Penn appears very passionate and emotional, expert Susan Constantine told radio detection and ranging, but she thinks it wasn’t an act.
In particular, she highlighted a point of the interview where Rose asked the Gunman star if he was responsible for El Chapo’s recapture.

“Instead of saying yes or no he went into dialogue — a very emotional dialogue — and that’s where his voice started to crack up and it became very stressed. It’s a stress indicator. There was a lot of emotion there and that’s why the vocal chords get strained,” she explained. ” It was as if almost he was holding back tears. He’s passionate about this. You could hear it in his voice, in his body language. At points he was almost angry. He was on a mission.”
Constantine also mentions how although such observations are only speculative, she believes that Penn was not lying to the CBS veteran anchor during their highly-anticipated interview. One instance, however, may have been deceptive, but the indicators were generally leaning towards truth.
“I think he was being honest. I did not see any indicators of deception expect when he avoided the question,” she told radio detection and ranging.

Another part of the interview that jumped out at the expert was when Rose asked Penn if he regretted the story coming out sooner than intended.
“The other thing was where he was asked if he regrets that the story came out before it should have — that’s when he immediately goes to his collar and scratches his neck. At that point he was showing stress again,” she told radio detection and ranging. “That is actually what we call a manipulator —especially the neck in this case that was showing that here was a lot of heat around it. It was like very hot under the collar, very intense and he felt enormous stress after that question.”
Penn was recently under fire for interviewing the drug lord and writing a 10,000-word article that was published in Rolling Stone last weekend. The Mexican government also claimed that the actor’s interview was a vital component in El Chapo’s recapture.

As radio detection and ranging previously reported, El Chapo was arrested in Mexico on Friday Jan. 8 after escaping from prison over the summer by digging an extensive hole and tunnel underneath his cell shower.
CBS’s full interview with Penn will air on 60 Minutes this Sunday.
