Filming on The Iron Lady is underway in London and we’re getting our first look at double Oscar winner Meryl Streep — the most-nominated actress in the history of the Academy Awards — as former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who became the first woman to lead the European government in the 1980s.
The biopic is being directed by Phyllida Lloyd, who worked with Streep on the 2008 movie musical Mamma Mia!, and will center on “power and the price that is paid for power,” according to producers.
The movie charts the 13-day period leading up to The Falklands War in 1982. Jim Broadbent will star as the trailblazing politician’s husband Denis Thatcher and Alexandra Roach and Harry Lloyd will portray The Thatchers in their younger years.
“The prospect of exploring the swathe cut through history by this remarkable woman is a daunting and exciting challenge,” says Streep, who earned an Oscar for playing culinary expert Julia Child on the silver screen in 2009. “I am trying to approach the role with as much zeal, fervour and attention to detail as the real Lady Thatcher possesses – I can only hope my stamina will begin to approach her own!”
The Iron Lady opens later this year.
