First Look: New Photos and Plot Details For ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2’

It’s been more than 13 years since My Big Fat Greek Wedding arrived in theaters, where it remained for at least 12 months as it became the top-grossing romantic comedy of all time with a global take of $ 369 million. Most movies that earn that much churn out a quick sequel, but most movies that earn that much aren’t indies with Oscar-nominated screenplays that seem to have complete closure for their story and characters.

But fans have still been hankering for a follow-up, and eventually writer/star Nia Vardalos got to work on one. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is slated to hit theaters on March 25, 2016, providing some counter-programming against another big franchise installment, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Those of you looking more forward to the non-superhero sequel will be delighted to find that in addition to Vardalos, co-stars John Corbett, Andrea Martin (“Aunt Voula”), Joey Fatone (“Cousin Angelo”) and most of the rest of the original Greek Wedding cast is back.

There are also some new additions to the cast, including a special appearance by Greek-American icon John Stamos as well as young actress Ellen Kampouris (Men, Women & Children), who appears to be playing Vardalos and Corbett’s now-teenage daughter, Paris. According to USA Today, the plot of the sequel mainly involves Paris’s “angst and anger” and the “lull” of her parents’ marriage. “We have spent all of our time on our daughter and we’ve forgotten to look at each other,” Vardalos told the newspaper. “It’s pretty typical.” There is also reportedly another Greek wedding — a bigger, fatter one, of course — for fans to get excited about. 

As for other familiar elements of My Big Fat Greek Wedding to count on, another USA Today article specifically spotlights the romantic leads’ hair, promising that both Corbett and Vardalos are bringing back their big ‘dos. The people working off screen on the sequel even consisted of a lot of the original’s crew, including those necessary to help with those familiar looks. “It was comforting to have even the same hair people there,” Vardalos told the newspaper. “They knew us. They remembered. They had the pictures. It was kinda cool.”
